This week I have been outlining the types of data that linguists need to be able to use and relate to each other as they do Language Documentation and Linguistic Research. I try to express these things graphically and then also express where some of the leading tools which SIL International is offering sit in the problem space.
If there are any glaring omissions then please speak up.
Five things that I can think of which are related to data management are really the project management side of things and are less “Linguistic”:
1. Project goal and Project management charting. To-Do lists and objectives as task, or stages of tasks. (promises made in the grant.)
2. Schedules if working with a dispersed team, what are the schedules which consultants are coming (not that they aren’t on soft time anyway…)
3. Finances: Tracking finances for income or expenditures for the projects.
4. Publicity: interactive features and web presence for the project.
5. Computer Network set up and tools list for the project.
Like I said these are not quite Linguistic data issues but they are data sets which need to be managed.
